At The Movies

Who we are, what we are about, and why we may have randomly added you.

You may have noticed that we have randomly added you and wondered who we are and why we have taken a sudden interest in you. Cineaste and You.. A beginners guide...Collapse )

The only real rule is try to stay positive and nice to each other. There is enough negativity in the world, why invite or make more? State your opinions all you want, but let's be open minded and kind to each other while doing so, agreed?

Any Questions? No?? Okay, Coffee, Tea, and Doughnuts in the back and smoke 'em if ya got 'em.

As you know now, the three of us,X,Y,Z.sre related. X is my brother and Y my partner.
When my mother got Cancer AGAIN. XIM and I had a sick mom and Y, a sick mother in law that he loves.

That's why we stopped working on this great project. Helping her was more important

Last month she called to tell me she's in temporary remission but before i could even be happy... She told me Xim. My beloved brother Jim had Cancer as well and aggressive and sprrading.

Every dollar will help but more than that. We can't put this emergency on Twitter or Facebook, though that could snowball this.... It would get back to the child he is trying to be with.... The child he raised though she wasn't his

Donations or spreading the love.... Thank you.

Twilight Zone

As many of you were, wee signed and gobsmacked by the death of David Bowie (I made a playlist if you're interested, of my fav. thirty six songs)

no title

So we listen to the music and rewatch Labyrinth, The Man Who Fell To Earth, Basquit, The Hunger, Fire Walk With Me,etc.... Then BAM!!

As you know, the original the of us that started this blog had to take a step back because Xim is my brother, Yearrgsworth my partner and my mother is battling Cancer again... After losing all her sisters to it.

Then Bowie who is... Was born in the year of the Boar, like her.. Then Alan, who died the age she will be in March.... Two favourites... Dying because Cancer is an ASSHOLE... SIGH...

Though most know him from the Potter series as an unforgettable Snape...we are also getting out Dogma, Mesmer, and... God, 68 films... One for just about every year he lived!!!

We are in back to back loses/ shock. 😢😢😢😢

We respected these men. Their talent is undeniable.

Does anybody have any memories of either Rickman or Bowie you want to share?!?!

Oh My Gawd, They Live!!!!

Yes!! And how was YOUR 2015?!?

Now, erase erase erase and onto better things we hope.

Y. and I have been up all night talking (because his father was rushed to the E.R. It NEVER ENDS for this foursome!!) and the subject of AWESOME SERIES FINALES came up, followed of course with HOW COULD THAT SHOW JUMP THE SHARK THAT BADLY..... WHY DID SUCH AMAZING WRITERS F$#K US IN THE END!!!!????!?!

Then we said "don't we have a blog to discuss this sort of thing with like minded people?!?" (Just Kidding, we never forgot you guys)

I was going to make a poll... But I need some of your nominations for best SERIES finale' and or the FREAKING worst!!!

All ideas/suggestions with go into the poll, to be made within a week.

All healthy discussion/ disagreement/ conversation encouraged.

P.S. Sorry life got hectic but, I've really missed you all....

Clara Bow

Why oh why am I still reading a blog that never posts?!?!

And one R., Xim, Yearrrrgsworth and I just discussed.

Honestly with our great love of film, all four of us had life sock us in the jaw.

That being said, I won't waste time apologizing....

I will just ask you the question we came to...
Would any would-be writers, reviewers, pro, or man on the street like to throw in their spice?!?!

You pick the film. You review it your way. It is that simple.

Let me know if you wanna take a stab at it.... film or television... We may even go into books eventually.. And I will give you the ins, outs, password and we four can become we five or six.
Btw, I highly recommend "Hey,Boo", The documentary of Harper Lee and To Kill a Mockingbird. Very informative and amazing. Deliteful. There's a word this cynic rarely uses!!!!

American Horror Story

You probably hate us or wonder "why am I still on this list, they rarely post"

And you know some of the issues.. One was without a computer, One Moved, and I started having injection in my Spine (lovely I know) while Y. takes care of me. Watching movies GOOD. Reviewing PAINFUL.

But you have stuck by us and things are settling down so I wanted to give you a preview of things we have seen and are looking forward to sharing....

And much, much more....Collapse )

See you all next time!!

Star Trek

I was 5 that day in the 80's when I walked into my brother Xim's room... he was a "big kid", a senoir in highschool. I was little.. I just started school.
He was watching a spaceship show on a little black and white TV and shhhhed me when I came in.. I'd have to wait until the commercials. So I watched with him.

"Who's that!! The really Handsome man!! I'd like to marry a man like that when I'm a grown up!!"

Xim- "Lots of girls like him. That is a man named William and he is playing the Captain of the spaceship, sissie..."

"NO NO NO, I mean the other one!!! with the black hair and ears!!! I like HIM!!!!"

Xim looked down at me with a glint....and a smile that reached his eyes and he said "You like Mr. Spock?! But he is an alien!!!"

"I don't care, brother, he is smart and handsome and I LIKE HIM!!!!"

He lived long....and if prospering is being loved, he certainly prospered..... and will continue to as long as there is this thing called television.

Rest in Peace... You will be missed and we will never 'forget'.

At The Movies

O Captain! My Captain! Robin Williams--- 1951-2014

Although we mentioned him and his films often, as you can see by checking his tag, the only film of HIS that I/We have reviewed was one of my favourites, Terry Gilliam's "The Fisher King" here:

I remember when watching Steven Spielberg talking about making "Schindler's List" he said he should give half the Oscar to Robin because EVERY WEEK in Europe, when Steven was so depressed and felt he couldn't "go on" with making such a movie, he would call L.A. and call up Robin and say "Make me Laugh, friend!!" and after an hour on the phone long distance every week with Robin Williams, Spielberg would be in hysterics and say "OK... I can go back to the set tomorrow."

Granted, he was a comic that is once in a generation... but his dramatic works that are often overlooked... should be remembered... he was nominated for a few Oscar's before finally winning for "Good Will Hunting" and help launch two more careers (that was the movie star power they needed to get people to see their indy script).

James Lipton just said that they got an Emmy for "The Actor's Studio"s 250th show.. and in 20 years, there was a poll of who was the best and out of 250 actors or casts, Lipton said Robin Williams won the poll of 'Best Actor's Studio Guest.'"

Hopefully Tomorrow I can put up a Poll of his films... I am in shock... I think he, Morgan Freeman, and Tom Hanks are the most "beloved" American actors and LEAST likely (we would think) to go this way.

Feel Free to share your feelings.... And if YOU need help.. Don't let the sadness get you alone in a dark room... open the blinds and call a friend over.
I know I have been called in the middle of the night by friends at the end of their rope... and I know I have made that call before....

Jul. 19th, 2014

Breakfast a Tiffany's

Audrey Hepburn, James Earl Jones, Polls, and things in General

Yearrrgsworth feels so bad that he can't do a FULL review for the two 'winners' of our FILM poll, In Darkness and The Purge so in the MEANTIME, I am going to give you a short, woman's perspective to tide you over...Collapse )

Jul. 10th, 2014

Monty Python's Flying Circus

No, we have not forgotten your choices from the last Poll.

But Yearrgsworth wanted to do your 2nd and 3rd choices (Star Trek and The Purge) and he is working two part time jobs while beginning his higher education and going back to college. He also quit smoking a month and a week ago....so.. I don't nag him much anymore. LOL

So while we wait for him to find the time to get to the reviews that you showed the most interest in, I saw something on the 12 winners of all 4 'major' awards, called the "EGOT" Circle. (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, & Tony). In case you are wondering 'if there is only 12, why are 15 names down there?!?'
Because the last three, Babs, Liza, and James got one of their awards "honorarily" instead of merited competition, which makes them "Honorary EGOT's" and therefore, I put them in.

Poll #1974820 Would you like to talk about the Careers of any of the 12 People to have received an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony?!?

I am interested in learning more about or discussing this member of the EGOT club:

Richard Rodgers
Helen Hayes
Rita Moreno
John Gielgud
Audrey Hepburn
Marvin Hamlisch
Jonathon Tunick
Mel Brooks
Mike Nichols
Whoopi Goldberg
Scott Rudin
Robert Lopez
Barbara Striesand
Liza Minnellii
Jame Earl Jones

Are you curious about the careers of some of these talented people?! Maybe you are already a fan and would like to talk about some of their successes. I am not going to spoil it and go into which one I saw a documentary on that got me thinking (and I have yet ANOTHER documentary HERE on a DIFFERENT one that I plan on watching soon to bone up, knowledge wise). But to win just ONE of those awards is a big deal. Winning two puts you into a special club. Three.. the club becomes even more exclusive...yet all four of the "biggies"?!? You gotta have some chops for that!! Anyway, I was just curious if anybody was interested in going over some of them with me? If not, that's cool too... I will push Y. to hurry up and review 'In Darkness' or 'The Purge'. But the man who has smoked a pack or more a day for two decades hasn't had one in 36 days... so if I get something thrown at me, I am coming back to you guys!!! (J/K)

Citizen Kane

When we get backed up what do we do?!? A POLL!!!!

I know a few of these were on the last one and we only got around to doing your top choices. Those that know me or some of us IRL know it has been ONE HELL of a month of... oh.. what is the delicate, ladylike way of saying this?!?! BULLSHIT and MURPHY'S LAW BUTT-F&*KING us without lube.

Was that my outside voice?!?

SOOOOO.. In light of the fact that MANY of you are probably wondering why you are still on a site that is for movie reviews when they have been slacking off lately.. I BEG of you, give us some time to sort out our many real life dramas and problems so that we have more time and willpower to still down, watch, and then write the reviews that you have entrusted us to write.

With that being said, Here is what Yearrgsworth and I have seen this past 4 or more weeks. Please vote on as many as you would like to have reviewed or just opened up for have conversations about and we will do both (A 'No Spoilers Review' in the Text area, then some dirt about what we liked and disliked in the comment section. So there are no spoilers, but there is a place to talk about the film or show as well... In the hopes that both fans, haters, and those THINKING of watching will all be happy.)

Poll #1972747 What Do You Want Reviewed Or To Talk About Most?!?

Which of These Would You like to See Reviewed or Opened for Discussion!?!?

Saving Mister Banks
Star Trek (Into Darkness)
The Butler
12 Years a Slave
The Purge
White House Down
Escape Plan
No Place on Earth
Third Season of the Walking Dead
Third Season of Boardwalk Empire
Third Season of Sherlock
Third Season of True Blood
Second Season of American Horror Story
Citizen Hearst
Red 2

THANKS for your PATIENCE. We ALL TRULY appreciate that our readers have stuck with us through tough times.

<3, Zuzu

We have some good feedback on what you what to talk about.. but I am going to give the poll a few more days since only half of the writers have taken it and also, I have gotten complaints in the past that I have not left polls up long enough... So sometime in the next week, we will start getting into what YOU guys want reviewed.. I hope this extra time will be helpful for those that only check out their LJ once a week or so.. xoxoxo, zuzu

Dead Like Me

You probably thought we all died... Speaking of which...

I am sooo sorry for the long silence, but if I told you all what the four of us have had on our plates this past few weeks, you guys would SINCERELY not believe half of it!!! It's been THAT messed up, THAT cray-cray, and I pray-pray you forgive us and we can get back to normal around here... Or as "normal" as we are as a group, anyway. LOL

I am actually going to open with something that our old guest reviewer, Dante', brought to my attention. Now, I must be honest, I am not a HUGE Star Wars fan like Xim is, but this was a fun and interesting read if you are or are not one.

So, what do my Star Wars fans think about this interesting concept?!

Again, Stay Tuned, we have LOTS of great stuff to share with you, as soon as the world stops spinning underneath our feet 'like a Record Baby, Right Round round round....'. (Oh yeah, I went -there-. I would even spin a flag around my head if I had one!)

Clockwork orange

American Horror Story- Asylum

First off, Y. wants to apologize for not getting a review of "Purge" to you yet. With school, work, and taking care of me while I was sick then getting ill himself, it's been a LOOONG month. We are behind and have about 6 reviews we wish to bring to you, Including all the ones from the recent poll, Sherlock series 3, and now American Horror Story, season 2.

We both LOVED the writing and the scares in American Horror Story (the first season) that we recorded the next two yet never got around to watching them due to..well LIFE.

We have heard so many positive things about the THIRD season, A.H.S. Coven that we knew we had to get to it... but not before watching 'Asylum'Collapse )

Any thoughts?!?

Beatles go to the Movies

Double Documentary Review- Good Ol' Freda & Room 237

We gave you a poll to let you know everything we watched lately and asked you to steer us in the direction you wanted us to go first. We had a Three Way Tie. Yearrrgsworth will get on "The Purge" for you this week. But I will do the other two, both of them documentaries, here in one shot:

I would say which do you want first, The Good or The Bad...but in this case, it was The Bad and the Disappointing but Okay..Collapse )

Okay, Y. with get on 'The Purge', we will write the others in the poll and also, Sherlock since we just finished Series 3. Finally!!

Forgotten Silver

Please Forgive Our Absence

The Snow Melted and Life got Super Busy!!

We have still been watching some movies, as you can see, but have not had time to review them proper. So, below is what we have watched in the past couple weeks. If anyone reading could be so kind as to check off what they would most like to discuss or see reviewed, that would give us a place to start.

Poll #1964194 Which would you rather read a review of??

Of the Following Films, which would you most like to see a review of or discuss??

Good Ol' Freda (Documentary on The Beatles Secretary)
Star Trek (Into Darkness)
The Butler (Drama)
The Purge (Horror)
Room 237 (Documentary on The Kubrick Film 'The Shining')
White House Down (Action/Adventure)
No Place On Earth (Docu. about Jewish Survivors that hid in subterranean caves during WWII)
Escape Plan - (Action)
3rd Season of The Walking Dead (Focusing on Woodbury)

We will keep the review spoiler-free for those that have not seen it and then discuss the film in detail in the comments with you so we can talk about it, but not ruin it for those that haven't seen it. (If they stop reading after the review and skip the comments, that is. LOL)

Again, sorry we got caught up with all of life's many distractions. Just tell us where you would like us to start so we can review what interests you most first.

You guys are the MOST... to say the least!! (Oh God, if I EVER quote ANYTHING from 'Grease' again, you have my permission to smack me silly and tell me I need a nap. =) )

Talking about all those WONDERFUL Christopher Guest pictures got me thinking about franchises and trilogies. So I thought.. Why Not Get YOUR Opinions!! See what you liked and what was... better left on the cutting room floor?!Collapse )

I know in some cases you may like the first, second, or third but not the whole franchise. If that is the case, feel free to let your reviews flow and tell us what you think!!

I Hope you Enjoy the Poll.

Princess Bride

Christopher Guest Movies

First off, HAPPY PURIM to our Jewish friends tomorrow!! I almost got to see "Esther and the King" with a young and GORGEOUS Joan Collins, Circa 1960, but caught it in the last half hour... and if I am five minutes late, I just can't watch a movie. Yes, I am one of THOSE..

But while I was thinking of Purim, my mind wondered to 'Home For Purim', the "movie" that was trying to get made in the HILARIOUS Christopher Guest 'Mockumentary' "For Your Consideration".

Poll #1960561 Christoper Guest Films

Which of these Films Do You Love??

This is Spinal Tap
The Princess Bride
A Few Good Men
Waiting For Guffman
Best In Show
A Mighty Wind
For Your Consideration
Night at the Museum- Battle for the Smithsonian
The Invention of Lying

Now, I know that poll had 4 or 5 films that he acted in.. But it also has the 4 1/2 he Directed, Stared in and Wrote: Collapse )

HOPEFULLY, you have had the joy of seeing all four of his Masterpieces in Comedy. If not, and you enjoy this type of comedy, I beg of you to get a hold of the others!! You will laugh so hard, it HURTS.

The Fountain

Cabin in the Woods - review by R

I'm sure a lot of folks here have seen this by now, but I was a latecomer to this film as I have a tendency to avoid horror (the irony, since one of my classes in film school was all about horror - though that might be more cause than ironic, hmm). I finally was convinced by my older brother who hinted at the metatextual quality of the film, which swayed me (I love meta in my entertainment).

In short synopsis, we have in true horror film fashion a group of friends retreating to the woods somewhere for a vacation that turns horribly, horribly awry. Or does it?[This review is very spoiler-heavy, so if you haven't seen this movie, it will both spoil you and not make much sense otherwise.]

I have to admit, I spent a lot of the movie saying, "WTF?" to my tv screen, because we open with two desk jockey types on a golf cart, before we move into the expected exposition about beautiful, sexually active college kids looking to romp on a road trip that starts with a bizarre hillbilly warning (though Scream didn't cover that in their rules for surviving a horror film, Tobe Cooper and Texas Chainsaw certainly got that point across).

By the time I made some degree of sense of what the two disparate narratives were doing (the controllers and the victims), I was so caught up in what the story was doing I didn't really notice I was watching a scary movie (Note: I have nothing against horror or scary movies as a whole, but I get grossed out by the sight and sound of so much splatter). It changed narratives at a pace that kept me far more engaged than I expected.

The meta of the story was different than other meta I've seen and read about horror (I'll try and dig up the 20 page paper I did on the Final Destination series for ya'll sometime) in that it gave a reason, however flippant, for the tropes we've come to associate with this type of horror film. That it did so while subverting them completely was a great treat for me as a film viewer.

Trivia time: Fran Kranz's stoner character Marty didn't get into the lake because shirtless he actually is more physically defined than Chris Hemsworth or Jesse Williams. Yowza.

The way in which the movie spiraled to its ending, while gruesome, had a certain hilarity to it. For the modern audience who has seen everything, giving a literal bloodbath of a scene was such overkill as to be as comically subversive as the rest of the film. No one was the hero. The stoner wasn't the weak link in the group. Forces beyond the victim's knowledge were no more capable at surviving what they set in motion.

The narrative of the control booth had its own secondary meta to it, like that of being able to watch the process of making a scary movie. We got to see its directors, its producers, the invisible forces that dictate the final product that comes to the movie screen. That they suffered the same fate as those they were sacrificing is a bit of a wink by the writers to how much control (or how little) they have on the end result.

Ultimately, I really enjoyed this movie, both for its unique storytelling, and for the opportunity to read some subtext (intended and otherwise) into a genre that tends to be overlooked by critics and audiences who don't expect depth. This movie definitely had depth (and I don't just mean the sleeping giants).

Shirley Temple Black- 1928- 2014- Rest in Peace, Bright Eyes.

It is my sad task to inform you that yesterday we lost a star, an icon, an ambassador, and a philanthropist when Shirley Temple passed away at the age of 85Collapse )

For those not familiar with this movie, Mr. Robinson plays a butler (Like Hattie McDanial, he often said "I'd rather make ten times weekly PLAYING a maid or butler that BEING one and my family starving!!") with an obstinate little girl that does NOT want to obey bedtime. He coaxes/tricks her into going to bed by getting her to promise she will go upstairs to the nursery -IF- he showed her a "New Way" of going up the stairs. This sweet, barrier breaking scene was seen as sooooo bothersome, though the older gentleman only holds Shirley's hand for less than a minute, that some theaters cut it out or refused to play the film at all. No matter. Her movies alone saved a dying studio and uplifted an entire nation's hope in it's time of need.

So, it should be no surprise that I also love zombie films. Recently I screened
